Antalya promotes its fabric

Village women not only earn money but also contribute to the tourism of Antalya’s Alanya district by selling the handicrafts they make in workshops.

The Alanya Governor’s Office started the project in 2008 to empower women to take part in production, and the products woven by local women are marketed to tourists as "Alanya fabric." The project aims to support the social and economic development of women who earn their living by farming in the village.

As part of the program, silk-weaving workshops were established in the villages of Uzunöz and Gümüşkavak. Silk shawls and scarves woven by 30 women who took the weaving course are sold in gift shops and hotels located in the district. Moreover, the same silk weavings are given as gifts to foreign tourism companies and agencies in international fairs so as to promote the district.

Antalya Techno-city starts indigenous seed production

In an attempt to turn Antalya’s agricultural potential to national advantage, Antalya Techno-city is preparing to start indigenous seed production. Planned on an area of 17,000 square meters on university land, the initiative is expected to free Turkey from dependency on imported agricultural products.

Antalya Techno-city Inc., formed within Akdeniz University, has been conducting intensive research and development work in various areas and acquired many patents since its founding.

Among their most recent initiatives is the production of indigenous seeds which have been collected from many Anatolian villages by university staff.

Aware of the health risks from seeds with foreign origins and imported agricultural products, Antalya Techno-city expects with this work to increase the agricultural potential of the region and prevent Turkey’s foreign seed dependency.

“These works by our honorable university staff will offer our people the agricultural products we are 100 percent sure are healthy,” said İsrafil Kurtcephe, Akdeniz University’s rector.

Highlighting that Antalya Techno-city is the only techno-city conducting agricultural works, Kurtcephe said the production center is also the result of national investment.

“Antalya, which owns a 13 percent pie in Turkey’s agriculture sector, deserves this success,” Kurtcephe said.
