Village women not only earn money but also contribute to the tourism of Antalya’s Alanya district by selling the handicrafts they make in workshops.
The Alanya Governor’s Office started the project in 2008 to empower women to take part in production, and the products woven by local women are marketed to tourists as "Alanya fabric." The project aims to support the social and economic development of women who earn their living by farming in the village.
As part of the program, silk-weaving workshops were established in the villages of Uzunöz and Gümüşkavak. Silk shawls and scarves woven by 30 women who took the weaving course are sold in gift shops and hotels located in the district. Moreover, the same silk weavings are given as gifts to foreign tourism companies and agencies in international fairs so as to promote the district.
