Turkish Republic to mark its 87th year


The 87th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic will be celebrated throughout the nation Friday, with various activities scheduled – weather permitting.
Bad weather conditions have forced Istanbul to postpone until Sunday a parade set to take place on Vatan Street on Friday.
Nevertheless, numerous other public events will go ahead, with crowds expected to spill out on to the streets to celebrate the founding of the country.
In a written statement, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed Thursday his excitement to proudly and joyfully celebrate Turkey’s Republic Day, calling on people to unite and look to the future with hope.
Some activities planned to celebrate the birth of the Turkish nation include parachute shows performed by the Turkish Air Force scheduled to take place in Ankara, Erdek, Selçuk, Ortaca, Ceyhan, Kırkağaç and Kilis.
A number of Turkish naval warships will be open to the public in Trabzon, Samsun, Kastamonu, İnebolu, Istanbul (at Dolmabahçe Palace), İzmit, Erdek, İzmir, Marmaris and Mersin.
The Istanbul horizon will be the backdrop for a massive night-time fireworks show on the Bosphorus.
Republic Day commemorates the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, when, on Oct. 29, the new name of the country and its status as a republic was declared with a vote on constitutional amendments. Following approval of the new Constitution, a vote was held in Parliament and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was selected as the first president of the Turkish Republic by unanimous vote.

Turkey’s first ice bar opens in Antalya


Black Ice Bar, Turkey’s first and just one of seven ice bars in the world, opened at the Antalya Ramada Hotel on Thursday. In the bar, the tables, glasses, seats, floors and walls are all ice. The bar’s temperatures is -8 degrees Celsius all the time. The Ice Bar is decorated with ice sculptures and colored with different lights. 

Entrance fee is 16 euros, including a free beverage. Customers are allowed to stay inside for 45 minutes. At the end of each session, customers can pass to another bar in the hotel.

Antalya World Weightlifting Championships 2010


Antalya Expo Center is hosting the World Weightlifting Championships on September 17-26. Altogether 561 athletes from 81 countries will join the competition, which is the first qualification game for the 2012 London Olympics, said President Hasan Akkus of Turkish Weightlifting Federation in a speech at the opening ceremony.

he 78th Men's and 21st Women's World Championships 2010, Antalya set a "World Record" even before getting started. Women weightlifters from 54 countries are participating in the competition that started today, altogether 218 women will perform on stage. This high number of participating countries has never been reached before at any other competition. The previous record was set during the World Championships in Thailand 2007 where women from 53 countries competed in the city of Chiang Mai.

Turkey's Nurcan Taylan[1]has set a world record by lifting 214 lbs./121 kgs. in the clean and jerk at the World Weightlifting Championships in the women's 48-kilogram category. Taylan, a gold medalist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, said after the contest Friday that she "wrote history in her own country." The previous record of 120 kgs. was set by Chen Xiexia of China in 2007.
